I think you are confusing "Product Thinking" with "Agile Project management". In the Software specially ones that requires lot of research, we generally start with a "Spike" and then after getting a fair idea of the scope or feasibility of the task, we add the timelines. The days of having strict timelines and getting feedback after months are gone. Now it is "move fast and fail fast" model applied in most of the cutting edge technologies
