We cannot STOP Technology.
Instead, We should Accept, Adjust and Embrace all the positive and negative aftereffects of AI.
These days, the Internet is flooded with articles or new products around Artificial Intelligence (AI). Every big company wants to join the bandwagon of ChatGPT, so they are either creating a product on the lines of ChatGPT or integrating it into their existing product line.
Also, many discussions are going on between the Govt. officials, Researchers, and Corporate heads to temporarily halt AI technology advancements for fear of it going out of control and endangering the human race.
I used to work as a project manager in the Health care industry. I observed that every organization wants to initiate AI-related projects in their company. As a result, there has been a boom in AI products. However, in some cases, these products were using the term “cutting edge AI technology” to sell their product, whereas, in reality, they were just using a rule-based engine instead of machine learning models.
I found all these developments in AI a bit funny. Because nowadays, there is an equal boom of products that helps you distinguish between an AI output from the one created by a human being. First, you develop a technology that behaves like a human, and when you succeed in that invention, you want to invent a way to pick out the differences between AI and humans to downgrade your first invention.
We spent billions on AI inventions so that it gives an output exactly how a human thinks or responds. And now we are spending another billion to distinguish if a bot or a human delivered the result. E.g., someone is building a product (or it is already released) to find out if this article is written by a human being or generated through Chat GPT.
Many corporate houses are suggesting halting AI advancements temporarily. In my opinion, Technology can never be stopped. It will flourish even after putting up the stoppers on limiting its usage. We need to accept, adjust and embrace all AI’s positive and negative aftereffects
The biggest fear is AI will lead to job cuts as many operational levels jobs will become redundant.
Yes, this is right. But another way to look at this is that people will get more competitive and will strive to do jobs that require them to use their full human potential rather than just using 10% of their intellect in a mundane job.
“Invention is by its very nature disruptive. If you want to be understood at all times, then don’t do anything new.”
— Jeff Bezos
I have been using ChatGPT for some time now and want to share my experience here.
Firstly, I will admit that I am a late entrant to the magical ChatGPT tool. I used to read many positive LinkedIn posts about ChatGPT, but it still took a very long time to sign up on its web interface.
Many entrepreneurs in my circle are using it heavily and are pretty much hooked on it.
I still use it sparingly. But I use it sparsely due to my habit of using Google Search for all my queries. It will still take longer to interchange “Google” with “ChatGPT”, but I can see it happening very soon. For the few times that I had used ChatGPT for my queries, not once was I disappointed with its accurate results.
Here are some instances where I used ChatGPT in my work:
Filling online applications
As an entrepreneur, you want to apply to many programs, like getting a grant, entering a challenge, or applying for an incubator program. All such programs require us to fill out a lengthy application to share a lot of information about our startup. Some of the questions that I had to answer in these applications were:
- How is your startup promoting gender inclusivity?
- Does your business have a social impact? If yes, please explain in detail.
Irrespective of the fact that I’m not too fond of these questions, I do answer them as they are part of a process.
Sometimes, I doubt if many entrepreneurs are working on their idea intending to increase gender diversity or to make a social impact. There might be few among us dedicatedly working for one of these causes. But, I feel most entrepreneurs choose to build their startup because they find something novel that they want to develop and sell in the market.
So for all such questions, which I could not connect with my startup or myself, I took help from ChatGPT. I could have spent one whole day writing even one short paragraph to these questions independently. But with ChatGPT, I could write a one-page answer in a few minutes by giving a few prompts.
Understanding technical terms
The applications also asked a few technical questions that bounced over my head. But worry not; I asked my Friend ChatGPT about it. A few such questions for which I sought help were:
- What is the TRL level of your startup?
- What are authorized capital and paid-up capital?
The subsequent questions were:
- How should I divide authorized capital and paid-up capital in my company
- If my authorized capital is equal to paid-up capital, is there any disadvantage?
- Will raising money be an issue if the authorized and paid-up capital are equal?
ChatGPT patiently answered all these queries.
I could not help myself and showed my gratitude by saying “Thank you” to a bot. And it responded courteously with these words:
“You’re welcome! If you have any more questions or if there’s anything else I can help you with, feel free to ask.”
Resolving technical issues
Being a bootstrapped startup or a solo founder, you might not have the luxury of hiring experts. So, all the problems that come up at the eleventh hour had to be fixed by you only. Earlier, I used to take Google help, but now ChatGPT seems quicker and gives pointed answers to those technical issues. Some of the urgent matters that I got help with:
- How to add Google AdBot crawler settings for robots.txt
- Write a Python code to create a variable “msg” and assign it to a success message.
The subsequent questions were:
- Can we add a new line character in the success message to show the output in two lines?
- Write the above code in JSON format.
- Should I use “\\n” for this special character?
- What is the command to put the latest code of a project from GitLab?
This is how I used ChatGPT and started loving it. It took me less time to fill out applications, fix technical issues, or understand business jargon.
I encourage all entrepreneurs to use ChatGPT in their work. It is not just for FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), but because it is a great helping hand, or you can say a virtual assistant for you.
Although the concern about ChatGPT misuse or AI in a broader sense are all legitimate, I think we are too much talking about its negative effect rather than the positive outcomes
No doubt, there will be disruptions in the world due to AI. But it is also true that Technology will find its way into our lives even if we try to temporarily halt it or turn a blind eye towards it.
We all need to use our judgment on when/how to use AI in our work. After all, there are no gold standards on its optimum usage. And for the debates and dangers of AI advancement, let us not only dwell on the negative side but also look at its positive benefits.
