Which business function would you spend your time most?

Whatever is your answer, Sales has to be one of your choices.

Every week, I write an article to share my learning or discovery during my startup journey. Here is the link to my reasons for penning these articles for myself and for many others like me.

As a solopreneur, you need to work on all the business functions. But when I picked product development, I only wanted to work on it. On Monday evening, I thought tomorrow I will allocate half a day to sales activities. But on Tuesday, I again worked the whole day on product development. The same story repeated on Wednesday and Thursday too. On Thursday evening, I started seeing some other problems behind my over attention to product development.

There is no doubt in my mind that if there are no sales, then for whom I’m building this product. After some retrospection, I found out that it is my fear of sales that is forcing my mind to hide behind product development. Sales was never my first, second or even third love. Talking to people and on top of that selling to them is something which makes me very uncomfortable. On the other hand, product development is my favorite work. I can do it all day. When I run in to some challenge on any feature development for the product, I google the solution, and then also checks few other new things related to that solution, and this is how my whole day goes off.

I remembered a startup, where I had worked for few months. The CEO of that organization had built a 10-member sales team, but the product team had only 1 developer. Interestingly the company was selling a software product. It came as no surprise that CEO had 20+ years of experience in sales and henceforth he only picked up his most favorite work in his company. It is very clear that people tend to work more in their niche areas.

But this is dangerous if you own a company. You need to develop all the business functions equally. I am making the same mistake too, being a developer, I am just concentrating on the Product development side. After this light-bulb moment, I decided to devote 2 days in a week for Sales & Marketing activities in my business. On these 2 days, I would not touch the product development work at all. Therefore, I spent my Friday only doing sales activities. I will keep this schedule for now until another light-bulb moment strikes.

Wishing you all a great week and some light-bulb moments too!

The next article will be published at weekly intervals. Simply send me some claps and feedback if you enjoyed my article.
